How ChatGPT helped me write a Game Design Document

As an aspiring game designer, I recently came up with a game idea. I had a general concept in my head, so I thought why not let ChatGPT write the GDD for me. That’s when I turned to ChatGPT.

When I described a game mechanic that allowed the player to transform in-game objects into something else, ChatGPT helped me think through the details of how that mechanic would work and how it would affect the player’s experience. It suggested potential challenges that could arise, such as balancing the mechanic so that it didn’t make the game too easy or too difficult.

But the one thing that it couldn’t do was give image references. I asked it for mood board reference links, but the links it gave was of random houses and other stuff. Some links were not even working and redirected me to Pinterest homepage.

Although, when I asked for reference game, it gave a pretty nice reference games.

After the main document, I asked it to describe transformation mechanic, game characters, creatures and other in-game details as well

I also got the character descriptions from GPT. I also asked to write DALL-E prompts so that I could generate images for characters as well. Although I used Bing AI to create images.

Overall, ChatGPT was an invaluable resource in helping me write my GDD. Its ability to provide guidance, suggestions, and insights based on my ideas and questions was invaluable. I would highly recommend ChatGPT to anyone struggling to flesh out their game idea or write a GDD.

In conclusion, the advent of AI language models like ChatGPT has opened up new avenues for game design and development. With its vast knowledge and ability to provide insights and suggestions, ChatGPT can help game designers overcome common challenges and bring their visions to life.
